ran into some trouble with the fourth god
since i'm already in it figured i'd ask
anywhere dangerous you need someone to take a look into ?

[It's tucked under the door, impossible to reach except when someone's unlocking for the day. Or can go through walls.]

[There's blank space left underneath... but on the other hand, Rin could just wait for the shade to show up again.]

[ Rin is concerned enough by the vagueness of this message to stick around for more information. What is with the Nest and seriously ending up on the bad side of Elias lately? Though, he is glad that someone's targeting Elias while the rest of them have been concerned with thwarting the Fog. It's just been harder to chance upon a way to strike out at the Fourth. If Stocke managed to piss him off, maybe he knew a way. ]

[Rin's waiting pays off. At next sundown, a shadowed silhouette shows up again, picking its way with slowly-tiring footsteps to the shop's door.]

[Whenever he sees Rin, Stocke seems to want to freeze - at least, his tendrils still. But he can't. So instead Stocke gives in and keeps walking toward the harpy, albeit at a slower pace.]

[ Rin gives a curious look at that reaction. He doesn't think he's done anything to put Stocke on the defensive lately. He wasn't even that bad about the Greed thing. ]

What's this about trouble?

[It's nothing Rin has or hasn't done, honestly; Stocke just wasn't entirely expecting to run into him instead of a note in return, and... has mixed feelings on anyone seeing him with a sapping curse he hasn't been able to counteract. He must be getting tired.]

[The shade slows even more once he reaches the door, but - uncharacteristically for Stocke - doesn't seem able to stop moving. Fidgeting? Something. He paces back and forth in one spot.]

Sabotaged o- ...two of his places. Got cursed in return.

[Stocke, could you possibly get any less detailed?]

[ Rin studies him harder, raising a brow at the constant motions. Stocke never really seemed like the guy who fidgets a lot like Rei or Nagisa. He's usually pretty well together.

But the explanation arrests even more of Rin's attention, as his head shoots up, body growing tense. That dangerous light is back in his eyes, signaling the moments where Rin's more carnal edge tends to take over. The moments when his morals are slightly more flexible than norm. The chance to strike back at the gods. ]

How did you do that? I was convinced striking out at the bastard was going to take some heavy infiltration of his followers?

[Rin, of all people aside from the Nesters, should have the full story - this means Stocke doesn't talk for a few moments, rounding everything up in his head. It'd be faster, only... well, he's already starting to run down. Nowhere near as bad as it'll get, but he's feeling the edges of it.]

I couldn't get to the Arcade without someone to let him in, no. But there's the tunnels he made. And the network is still part of him.

I had the thought - the priests have to do something for them, to be priests. An expression of worship. So if I did the opposite - something meant to desecrate...

Don't know if it was that or stealing part of the network that he didn't like. Both, maybe. But it did something - the old Nest in Vandare. It's not his anymore.

[ This is a lot to absorb... ]

How did you... steal part of the network? You know where it's based? And did you say you broke the conduit at the Nest?

[ The only conduit they've ever broke before was the one over the park, and that had happened after they redirected worship from the Fog. Since the only people who worshiped Elias seemed to be fellow monsters, he hadn't thought there was a way to replicate that with the Fourth. But desecration... it's not a bad strategy at all. And one that he wouldn't mind doing. ]

Liewen Labs. Liewen might not be there any longer, but those larger devices that keep it running - they're still under guard there. I took whatever looked most important that I could carry.

[It seems obvious to Stocke - but then again, it's never been that widely publicized, has it? Not since the excitement when it was originally released. Stocke doesn't think Rin was around four years ago...]

[The shade's tendrils flip upward in a bemused sort of way.] It's freed, [he confirms.] Don't know why the old Nest instead of something closer - maybe I was thinking of it without realizing.

Where did you put it? You know that bastard's going to come after you to get it back. Unless you already destroyed what you took?

[ Which honestly wouldn't bother Rin either way. ]

Haru said we should look into ways to communicate without the network anyway. I'm thinking about asking Mana for something that might be able to do the trick.

And maybe it's just because it was you. The reverse ritual responded to something you really wanted. The last one worked based on what we were focusing on at the time since we wanted to overwhelm the Fog with another wish, another purpose. If you were still yearning for the Nest when you interfered with Elias, maybe something sensed that and interpreted it as your prayer.

It's smashed, [Stocke confirms.] Not the kind that'd allow for repair.

[Though that doesn't mean Liewen Labs can't build new parts... or even that Stocke took the right ones. The network's still working, far as he can tell.]

[Still, something made Elias angry.]

[The shade breathes in as if to respond to the rest of it, then shakes his head and remains silent. Eventually, still pacing back and forth, he says -] Mana's as good a bet as any.

[ Rin feels a swell of satisfaction at that confirmation. Good, it's about time Elias lost something. Hopefully, it hurt. Hurt half as much as how Rin felt when Reira turned on him for threatening her precious Fourth. Or when his most cherished part of being a harpy, his flight, was stolen from him whenever he entered the park. Or when people like Fiona and Kain had their memories forcibly corrupted and infiltrated. Just like that. ]

She's about all we've got that even comes close to rivaling them right now. And even she doesn't want to get too involved.
