It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year
With the exception of his darker years, Rin has never been one to shy away from a party. Especially when that party happened to be hosted by his first official sponsor. So he's shown up in full regalia, a silk black tuxedo jacket with a dark red satin vest underneath and his tie in a presentable Windsor knot for once.
He passes from guest to guest in a whirl of fabric and sparkling teeth pressed together in a charming grin. Each greeting is of course accompanied by a beaming introduction of his plus-one, a Tachibana Makoto, "aspiring swimming trainer who is, for the time being, content to give his time to promoting the next generation of Japanese Olympic hopefuls." Pleasantries are quickly exchanged between parties, somehow made out amid the din of over-zealous holiday music, as Rin drags Makoto off to the front of another table generously decked out in spreads of red, green and gold. "Our colors," Rin had coyly pointed out to Makoto during the early days of the season. It might also be the rationality behind the splashes of a green vest beneath Makoto's three-piece suit, the result of a six-hour shopping adventure. (Rin's stamina for shopping nearly rivaled what he brought to the water.)
Neither of them spare much time for drinks, although Rin does grab a few more protein-substantial appetizers as waiters flit by.
Eventually, Rin decides that he has played the model gentleman enough for the moment (and that Makoto has probably beyond taxed his capacity for a cavalcade of strangers) and settles beside a display of poinsettias in the shape of a swan. Really creative there. He smirks and pulls Makoto over for a quick selfie by the dumb bird.
Rin brings the phone in again and begins hunting for the app that allows him to add things like cat ears. "Enjoying our first big party?" He says it in such a way that the "our" could easily be missed by anyone not paying super close attention to the conversation, as his gaze lifts from the phone screen just enough to catch Makoto's eye.

He can't help his inward sigh of relief when Rin pulls him away from the crowd finally, surprising him with a picture before turning his attention to his app. Makoto watches briefly over Rin's shoulder, chuckling as he smooths out the front of his blazer.
"It's...very grand, that's for sure," Makoto replies, brows upturning when he spots the cat ears. "It seems like you really are, too."

He finishes sketching out the green ears and then starts adding some whiskers, as he gives Makoto a light shoulder bump. "You're doing a great job, by the way. I know these things can be hectic."
Rin just really wanted to share his first moment with Makoto. Rin's never believed that any part of his journey has been made alone. But it's one thing to carry friends with you in spirit and another entirely to fit them into that world. Still, if he's going to pursue this future with Makoto at his side, why shouldn't he make that literal as often as he can. Yeah, it's going to take some constant awareness of his surroundings, given what he just stressed about image. But he's seen how long Makoto contented himself to remain background noise for others, he'll be damned if he's going to force him to do that now. He's not ashamed of them!
He just has to be smart about it.
"Thanks for agreeing to try it."

Now, Makoto himself has stepped up into the limelight at Rin's side. It's been a lot to adjust to, but ultimately worth it, he thinks.
He points to his phone with a slight smile, "You missed a whisker."

That part had come as the real surprise. As selfish as it sounded, part of him had worried that a relationship might complicate things. And while it still kind of did, the benefits outweighed the cons. Nothing compared to an ever-present source of support and boundless affection after a really lousy training day. Even better that that benefit could work both ways.
"We could seriously do with some better music though. How the hell is anyone supposed to dance to Jingle Bells?"

"There aren't enough slow Christmas songs for you, Rin?"

Okay, that's probably an exaggeration.

He shrugs and reaches for something else to nibble at, although the closest thing is just an assorted for the chocolate fountain. "Guess there's not too many holiday songs like that anyway."

Not only has he never danced with Makoto before. He's certainly never done it in public. And it might not be such a great idea with all these people watching. Potentially with cameras.
But if Makoto wants to dance...
"How are you at singing?"

"Well, we're still going to need music if we have to change venues." He motions with his head to the nearest door. "How else are we supposed to dance?"

"It's not on purpose. But I think I can do that." Maybe. He thinks.

"I have the utmost confidence in your ability," Rin says, as he walks backwards.
Some people turn toward them, curiously, but Rin waves them off.
"Just grabbing some fresh air. It feels kind of warm in here."
